Mobile App Security in India: Protecting Android and iOS Data
Mobile apps handle sensitive data across devices, networks, and third-party services. Learn how secure storage, encrypted connections, permission controls, dependency updates, and regular testing can help protect Android and iOS applications.

By Anjali Daksh·Published: October 24, 2026 at 12:15 PM ISTA mobile app resides on a phone that you do not control and on a network that you do not control. That is why mobile app security in India begins with an assumption: anything that is stored on the device or sent from it could be read by another person.
What the India data says
Appknox, a vendor that provides security, released a report on India’s top 100 Android apps. The summary states that 99 of those 100 apps had high‑risk vulnerabilities and that 97 percent of them requested permissions that could be dangerous.
However, the page does not provide the date of the report or explain how the apps were selected and tested. Appknox sells security products, which gives it an interest and the label "high‑risk" is its own classification. Also, the report focuses on Android. Treat the findings as a prompt to test your mobile app security, not as a definitive standard.
Mobile app security in India: where data leaks
This part reflects our opinion. Most issues are found in a few places: data stored on the device in plain text, weak login and session handling, traffic that is not properly encrypted, secrets such as API keys left inside the app package, permissions that the app does not need and old libraries with known flaws. Android and iOS differ in detail. The same habits apply to both. Good mobile app security is mainly these habits, used early. A lost or shared phone, a device or a public Wi‑Fi network can each expose what mobile app security holds so design for those situations and not only for the ideal one.
A mobile app security checklist for India
Again, this is our view. Six habits cover most of the ground.
- Store less. Do not keep data on the phone that you do not need and encrypt any data that you must keep.
- Protect the connection. Use encrypted connections and verify certificates.
- Keep secrets off the device. Keys inside an app can be extracted, so keep logic on the server.
- Ask for permissions. Each permission is something you must explain and defend.
- Check your libraries. Track third‑party. Update them.
- Test before release and after major changes. The OWASP Mobile Top 10 is a checklist used for what to test.
What to ask before you commission mobile app security in India
- Which checklist do you test against for mobile app security and can we see a sample report?
- Is testing done on both the Android and iOS builds?
- Who fixes what the tests find and how fast?
- Is security part of the design or only a check before release?
- How are keys and user data stored in the app?
How We Approach Mobile App Security in India
Our App Development service covers cross‑platform apps. Keeps a focus on OWASP security. We build in two‑week sprints and we agree with you early on which data the mobile app security will hold and which it will not.
If your team is planning mobile app security in India for an Android or iOS app, we’d welcome the conversation.
Frequently asked questions
What is mobile app security?+
Mobile app security involves protecting an application's code, user data, authentication, communications, and integrations from unauthorised access or misuse. It includes secure development, appropriate permissions, encryption, testing, and ongoing maintenance.
Why is mobile app security important for Android and iOS apps?+
Mobile apps may handle personal information, login credentials, payment details, and business data on devices and across networks. Security weaknesses can expose that information, so both Android and iOS apps need security controls suited to their design and usage.
What are common mobile app security vulnerabilities?+
Common risks include insecure local data storage, weak authentication and session handling, unprotected network communication, exposed secrets in app packages, excessive permissions, and outdated third-party libraries.
How can developers improve mobile app security?+
Developers can minimise stored data, encrypt sensitive information, protect network connections, keep secrets on secure server-side systems, request only necessary permissions, maintain dependencies, and test applications throughout development and after significant changes.
