Teams often use these two terms as if they meant the same thing. They do not. Mixing them up can lead to spending money in the wrong places. The difference between innovation and digital transformation comes down to scope. One is about adding or testing something. The other is about changing how the business runs at a level.

What the India data says

IDC’s India release in February 2025 said that AI spending in India will grow at 2.2 times the rate of overall digital technology spending over the three years. It also projected that the economic impact of AI in India will be over $115 billion by the end of 2027.

Three cautions. First, those figures are about AI spending and impact, not all transformation spending. Second, the IDC release does not define innovation separately from transformation. So, the distinction we are making here is our interpretation, not the IDC’s. Third, forecasts can change.

Digital innovation vs transformation: our view

This section shares our perspective. Digital innovation is about a thing: a new product, a new service, or a new way to reach customers. It is often tested in ways and fast. Examples include an ordering feature, an AI chat assistant for customer support, or a pilot program using sensors. If you ask what digital innovation is, this is the answer.

Digital transformation is about the organization. It involves changes in processes, data, systems, and skills. The goal is to make the business function. It affects teams. It takes longer. It needs a leader at the level to drive it.

The two are connected. A successful pilot can grow into a way of working. Innovation can also stay as a side project that never reaches the core of the business. Transformation without innovation can just move old processes to new software without real change.

A test: if you can switch it off and work continues as before, it is innovation. If switching it off breaks how work gets done, it is transformation.

Neither is better. A business with a core may only need targeted innovation. A business with systems and scattered data likely needs transformation first before any new idea can succeed. The common mistakes are calling a pilot a transformation and waiting for transformation to happen before trying anything new.

What to ask before you choose between innovation vs. digital transformation

  1. Are we adding something new or changing how we already work?
  2. Who owns the result, one team or the whole business?
  3. What will we stop doing once it works?
  4. How will we measure it, by pilot results or by changes in operations?
  5. Does it improve what customers experience or what we do internally?

How We Approach Digital Innovation vs Digital Transformation

Our Digital Transformation service has three capabilities: Digital Innovation, Data-Driven Insights, and Digital Experience Design. We work using a methodology. We use technologies like AI, IoT, and blockchain. We start by asking whether you need an offering or a change in how work runs. We plan based on the answer.

If your team is sorting out innovation vs. digital transformation, we’d welcome the conversation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between digital innovation and digital transformation?+

Digital innovation focuses on introducing or testing a new product, service, feature, or way of reaching customers. Digital transformation involves broader changes to business processes, systems, data, and skills to improve how the organisation operates.

What is an example of digital innovation?+

Examples include introducing a new online ordering feature, testing an AI chatbot for customer support, or piloting sensors to monitor equipment. These initiatives test a new idea or capability without necessarily changing the entire business.

What is an example of digital transformation?+

An example is connecting previously separate business systems and redesigning workflows so teams can share data and manage operations through a more integrated process. This typically requires changes across teams, systems, and ways of working.

Can digital innovation lead to digital transformation?+

Yes. A successful pilot can be expanded and integrated into core business processes. However, innovation does not automatically lead to transformation; the organisation must decide how to scale the idea and embed it into everyday operations.

Which is more important for a business: digital innovation or digital transformation?+

Neither is universally more important. A business with effective core systems may benefit from targeted innovation, while a business struggling with disconnected systems or fragmented data may need broader transformation. The right approach depends on its goals and challenges.
