Where German AI adoption actually stands right now

In the last two years, German businesses have adopted AI faster than in the previous decade. According to bitkom’s 2026 AI study, a survey was conducted of 604 companies of different sizes and industries. It says that 41% of German companies now actively use AI, which was 17% in 2024. Similarly, 48% of them are planning to adopt AI where only 11% of them are not even planning to. This is proof that using active AI has tripled in only 2 years.

But the adoption of AI is not the same for every company. Companies that have more than 500 employees have adopted AI at around 60% and the mid-sized companies with fewer than 500 employees are still described as “catching up” by Bitkom. This becomes important because Germany’s economy depends heavily on the Mittelstand; these are the small and mid-sized businesses, and many of them are family-owned.

Why the gap persists

The same Bitkom research has given the reasons why mid-sized companies are slower in adopting AI compared to others. 33% of the companies using AI, they say AI implementation costs are really higher than their expectations. There are other common problems, including a lack of in-house AI expertise, governance concerns, and data protection requirements. Germany has a large number of shortage of IT talent. Bitkom’s separate labour market research has found a shortage of 109,000 IT specialists across Germany as of August 2025. This is less than the 149,000 shortage reported two years earlier, but 85% of companies are still facing a shortage, with 79% of companies expecting the shortage to become worse in the coming years. Because of this, a lot of mid-sized companies without large in-house engineering teams are trying to build AI capabilities when finding local AI and software talent is already difficult.

Where the AI development demand is actually heading

Bitkom also gives some points to show where German companies are expected to focus next. It includes:

1. AI agents that can do tasks by themselves
2. The use of AI in software development
3. AI-powered knowledge management.

These are not just chatbot projects; they need engineers to build, test and maintain AI production systems and also need more than off-the-shelf AI tools.

Because of the talent shortage and lack of in-house AI skills, many German companies are using AI, especially mid-sized companies. These companies will look outside of their own hiring pipeline for AI engineering support.
