Where Italian companies actually stand on AI adoption right now

AI adoption in Italy is growing fast but starting late. According to Eurostat and ISTAT survey data from 2025, 16.4% of Italian businesses with 10+ employees had adopted AI technologies. This was 8.2% in 2024 and that is a doubling in a year, but Italy is still below the EU average of around 20%. The difference is very high compared with other countries where AI adoption is above 35%, like Denmark, Finland, and Sweden.

The gap is not even across industries.

Why so many Italian companies are still on the sidelines

The reason is not a lack of AI technology. According to this Eurostat data, 70.3% of businesses that did not adopt AI have said the major barrier is a lack of clear skills.
