A lot of companies use AI without thinking about risks. Employees may share customer data with public AI tools, or sometimes AI makes decisions that nobody can explain. AI governance in India is about using AI safely and responsibly. That means knowing the responsible one when anything goes wrong.

What India has put in place

MeitY released the India AI Governance Guidelines on 5 November 2025, under the Indian mission. As per SCC Online, there are 7 main principles:

  • Do no harm.
  • Treat people fairly.
  • Be transparent.
  • Take responsibility.
  • Protect privacy.
  • Include different groups of people.
  • Consider sustainability.

But there are some points to remember. SCC Online’s summary has not mentioned the compulsory parts. There is nothing that mentions incident reporting or confirms that a new AI law has been proposed. So these are just guidelines, not laws.

AI governance in India: what a company can do now

There is no need for new rules to start managing AI risks.

  1. Find out where AI is being used: Make a list of all AI tools used in your company. Include tools that employees have started using on their own.
  2. Assign responsibility: There should be one person responsible for every AI use case. This helps you in dealing with problems.
  3. Check the risks: Not every AI tool needs to be checked at the same level. It is not as risky to have a tool that notes internally compared with one that screens job applicants or scores loan applications.
  4. Keep people involved: when AI is affecting someone, someone must review the results and, if needed, they can correct them.
  5. Keep records: you should have records of the data and AI tools that have been used, how the decisions are made, and who approves them. This will help you when someone asks questions.

What to ask before you adopt AI

Before adopting AI, ask these questions:

  • What data can employees share with AI tools?
  • Who approves new AI projects?
  • How will we find incorrect or unfair results?
  • What records should we keep, and for how long?
  • Who can stop the AI system if something goes wrong?

How We Approach AI Governance in India

EICE Catalyst is our enterprise AI platform. It has tools that can help businesses manage security, privacy, compliance, and AI monitoring. This also helps you track AI performance through dashboards. Businesses can monitor productivity, quality, usage, risks, and business results. We provide help to companies understand where they are already using AI and what controls they need. For AI governance in India, we start with a list of the AI tools that are already in use. This helps in finding risks and deciding what needs attention first.

If your business is planning to adopt AI, we’d be happy to discuss your needs and help you get started.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI governance?+

AI governance is the set of policies, responsibilities, processes, and controls used to manage how AI systems are selected, developed, deployed, monitored, and reviewed.

What are India's AI Governance Guidelines?+

Released by MeitY under the IndiaAI Mission on 5 November 2025, the guidelines provide a national framework for safe, responsible, inclusive, and trusted AI adoption. They include seven guiding principles and recommendations across six governance pillars.

Are India's AI Governance Guidelines a law?+

The guidelines are a policy framework rather than a standalone AI statute. Businesses must still assess the existing laws and sector-specific requirements that apply to their AI use cases.

How can a business start implementing AI governance?+

Start by creating an inventory of AI tools and use cases, assigning owners, assessing risks, defining human review processes, and maintaining records of approvals and important decisions.

Why is human oversight important in AI governance?+

Human oversight helps organisations review consequential AI outputs, correct errors, handle exceptions, and provide accountability when automated systems affect people.
